Breakfast in Vienna - The 9 best breakfast places
Vienna inspires not only with art and culture, but also with culinary delights. In addition to classics such as Wiener Schnitzel and Tafelspitz, the city has a lively and diverse breakfast scene. During the week, there is often little time for a hearty breakfast, but on weekends or days off, the Viennese enjoy a varied morning meal. A traditional Viennese breakfast includes rolls, bread, cold cuts and cheese, butter, jam and, of course, coffee. Nowadays, however, eggs, yoghurt, bacon, pancakes and smoothies also enrich the city's breakfast tables.
A special place in the breakfast of the Viennese is taken by the roll and especially the Kaisersemmel. The Kaisersemmel, also known simply as a roll, is a traditional pastry that has a special place in Austrian baking culture. The Kaisersemmel is characterised by its unmistakable shape: a star-shaped surface with five incised segments, which is created using a special moulding technique known as the ‘Kaiser stamp’ or an artful handmade technique. This decorative appearance gives the Kaisersemmel its name, which refers to its historical significance as a high-quality bread roll in the imperial monarchy.
It is impossible to imagine everyday life in Austria without the Kaisersemmel. It serves as the basis for sandwiches, is spread with jam for breakfast or served as a side dish with soups and main courses. They are also particularly popular as a snack between meals, filled with sausage, cheese or fresh ingredients. The perfect combination of flavour, shape and texture makes the Kaisersemmel a symbol of Austrian baking art and an indispensable part of local food culture - a small piece of tradition that delights the palate every day.
