Schönbrunn Palm House
The construction of the Schönbrunn Palm House was commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph I and began in 1880. When it opened it was the largest greenhouse in the world with a total area of 2,500 m². It is still operated as a plant exhibition house in accordance with the original intention of the imperial family and in the tradition of the court gardeners. Every day visitors can admire over 5,000 tropical and subtropical plants here such as the Seychelles nut palm, a rarity in the hothouse, the wollemi pine, a living fossil in the refrigerated glasshouse, and the 200-year-old date palm in the central pavilion.
