Josephinum
The Josephinum, which was founded in 1785 as a military-surgical academy, is home to a its rich and varied collection. On display are anatomical wax models from the 18th century as well as the history of Joseph II, that of the First and Second Vienna Medical Schools and the darkest sides of our country under National Socialism. There are also exhibits related to today’s high-tech medical innovations. The highlights of the collection include the world’s first endoscope from 1806, the prepared stomach on which Theodor Billroth performed the world’s first successful gastric resection in 1880, and the file with which Empress Elisabeth was murdered in Geneva.
